Grandma's Flower Garden
I started on this quilt in March of 2004 while my Mama and sister, Sue were visiting. I bought the freezer paper type printed templates, and changed from that method to using the templates made of ironable mylar. I baste the fabric around each disc prior to stitching the block together. It helps to make each piece perfect. I have 30 blocks made and plan to add 19 more. I started this quilt at during the time that I found out that I had Chronic Hepatitis C and was awaiting gall bladder surgery and a treatment plan. While piecing this quilt Patrick started dating Amy and moved into an apartment on his own; Reggy asked Amanda to marry him and took a job at Zaxby's in Daphne as assistant manager. David graduated from Bishop State with a certificate in welding and was promoted to an "official welder and fitter" from an apprentice welder position. Richard registered for his final Funeral Service class and I was treated for Hep C and obtained a "virus free" status! The eye of Hurricane Ivan passed right over our home in Robertsdale, AL, but we were spared from devastating damage. Our home had minimal damage and the boy's homes were untouched. Lots of changes, huh?
Sister's Choice
These 15 inch blocks are joined with 3" strips. The prints are 1930's replicas and it will fit a queen sized bed like a spread! This quilt top was machine pieced in January-February 2004 during the time that I began to have a lot of physical problems. It was my "escape" from the fact that something was wrong. I still need to quilt it. It did what it was intended to do- cheer me up. This quilt will stay in my home as a family heirloom. I have big plans for quilting it up fancy!
Sunflower
As usual, this quilt top has a story, too. In September, 2001, just 13 days after to World Trade Center disaster, we had our own trial. Our oldest son woke us up to tell us that our home was on fire. To make a long story short, God, in His infinite mercy, spared all of our lives and blessed us daily as we went through this journey. It was also during the time that we were living in a rent home (while our home was being repaired) that I became too ill to return to work, and filed for disability. I lost all of my sewing things, everything. And to a fabric-a-hollic, that is tragedy in itself. Not to worry! God blessed me so much with every thing that I needed to get started again. I began piecing this quilt by hand while sitting in a rented recliner in a rented home and it toned my stress down dramatically. These blocks are 13 inches and the sunflower is pieced, then appliquéd to the blue print square. I then cut away the fabric behind the sunflower. It will fit a queen sized bed like spread and I have plans to hand quilt it too. That will probably be my "Prozac" project while going through something else.
